Aboriginal Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Projects

The following is a list of ICT-related projects initiated by or carried out with Aboriginal peoples and nations in Canada. This list highlights Aboriginal capacity in ICT and provides a snapshot of current research in this area. We are interested in identifying both research and practical projects. Description: We will examine the specific case of K-Net and work with members of this community to develop a strategy to create a digital library for elementary and secondary school students. Such a digital library would serve remote and isolated communities in Ontario's far North.

- Established a website for Keewaytinook Okimakanak and member First Nations
- Advocates for full broad band capacity in member communities and in other NAN First Nations

Description: Since May, 2002, KO Telehealth has been helping to deliver telemedicine services to remote First Nation Communities in Northwestern Ontario. We are currently working towards expanding this healthcare innovation from the initial five participating communities to an additional 19 First Nation communities in the Sioux Lookout Health Zone. KO Telehealth has the goal to improve and enhance health care by helping facilitate and integrate partnerships between the communities, funding agencies, health care organizations, teaching institutions and others interested in promoting First Nation health care.

Description: This program is part of a national decision to regionalize the nurses' training component of MSB and to transfer management to First Nations communities. The program has two components: a Community Health program for nurses entering with diploma preparation (which is still a major segment of MSB new hirings) and a Northern Clinical Practice component for nurses who will be working in remote nursing stations.

Description: Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation is developing their community broadband telecommunications network. The community obtained FedNor funding in 2004 to begin planning and building their local community network. The Mishkeegagamang project also helped provide some support funding for the development of the Pickle Lake broadband cable system which began operating in the summer of 2004.
